WINSTON-SALEM—Dan Besse, Winston-Salem City Council Member and Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor, will participate in the "Rally for our Kids" on Wednesday, October 10, starting at 4 p.m. in Clemmons at the intersection of Hwy. 158 and Lewisville-Clemmons Road.
"We have to stand up as Americans for the health of all our children," said Besse. "President Bush's veto of health care for children whose families' can't afford private insurance was a profoundly immoral act. We're turning out this Wednesday to tell our representatives to override that immoral veto of health care for kids."
"How can this guy sit in the White House, producing record deficit spending on everything else, and veto critical help for poor sick kids?" asked Besse. "It's an outrage—and we won't stand for it."
Besse explained that the Bush veto, if not overturned, will undercut North Carolina's efforts to cover more of the over 250,000 children in our state with no regular health care coverage. "I supported state legislation adopted this year which would help more hard-working low-income families protect their children's health, through timely doctor visits, needed medication, and other care," Besse said. "This veto by Bush of the federal part of funding for that effort threatens to pull the rug out from beneath our children's health care."
The "Rally for our Kids" is sponsored by the Forsyth County Democratic Party and other concerned organizations. It is part of a nationwide effort to show public support for the SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program) bill vetoed last week by George Bush. |
