Many of the days that I'm not on the road campaigning, I'm taking care of my responsibilities as a City Council Member for Winston-Salem. I don't usually include those activities as part of my "road report" here, but there are some that deserve special mention. Two of those took place on Sunday, September 9.
First, I took part in a long-awaited Welcome Home event for the 105th Engineering Group of the Army National Guard, based in Winston-Salem and just back from a 15-month tour of in Iraq. Personally, I actively opposed the ill-advised invasion of Iraq, and I support bringing our troops out of that sectarian civil war as quickly as possible. In the meantime, our service members are doing their duty at great personal risk and sacrifice, and they deserve no less than our sincere thanks and support.
Later that same day, I spoke to a September 11 remembrance event sponsored by a local church here in Winston-Salem. I took the opportunity to thank our firefighters, police, and other emergency first responders for their daily heroism for our communities, and to thank our service members for defending our nation. I also called on our fellow citizens to let our elected leaders know how those leaders have fallen short of living up to these same high standards.
On September 13, I drove west over the Yadkin River to Advance in Davie County, where I had the chance to speak to a Democratic barbeque organized by Mazie Laurence. Thanks Mazie!
Saturday, September 15, was another day of shuttling between cities: first to Durham for an event sponsored by Equality North Carolina, then back to Greensboro for the Guilford County Democratic Unity Dinner. The Unity Dinner reported a record turnout of over 400 Democrats—especially impressive for a non-presidential year. Congrats to the Guilford Dems!
Those are my latest campaign highlights. As always, you're invited to check my website for more background, issue information, and contact information at www.danbesse.org. Thanks!
