Winston-Salem City Council member Dan Besse is making plans to seek the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor in 2008.
Besse, a 51-year-old attorney, is best known around the state as an environmental advocate working with the Conservation Council of North Carolina.
He has also served on the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission and the N.C. Environmental Management Commission.
Besse has been moving around the state, speaking to groups. He has also set up a political committee.
"I have decided I am going to do it," Besse said.
He is one of a growing number of Democrats who are looking at the race to replace Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue, who plans to run for governor in 2008.
Other potential candidates include Canton Mayor Pat Smathers; Hampton Dellinger, a former legal aide to Gov. Mike Easley; and state Sen. Walter Dalton of Rutherfordton.
