I met in Greensboro on June 25 to discuss regional economic development challenges with other Piedmont Triad leaders. Next, it was back to the coast, Wilmington this time, on June 26-27. In addition to meeting with local supporters, I appeared as a guest on three separate radio shows, discussing issues and answering callers' questions. On June 28, I stayed home in Winston-Salem for the Cool Cities news event discussed above. Finally, on June 30 I walked with other Democrats in the Iredell County Independence Day Parade, spending a couple of hours in the summer sun trotting up and down the main street of Troutman, shaking all the hands I could reach. (Pat Smathers and his family were there too. They're good people, and I enjoy seeing them.)
I confess to taking one "break" this past week. On Saturday night, I took time to compete in the Twin City (Winston-Salem) Track Club annual "Ultimate Runner" event. It's a five-event running competition (mile, 400 meters, 800 meters, 100 meter sprint, and 5k cross-country run). Competitors must finish all five events in one evening, with points scored for finishing place in each one. I've done it for a few years now, and while we "old folks" can't keep up with the young toughs, we enjoy our own age-group competitions. Plus, it's always a great way to forget about your other stresses for a while!
