The North Carolina Chapter of the Sierra Club came to town last week to present its "Cool Cities" award to the City of Winston-Salem. The award recognizes municipal efforts to do our part in addressing the crisis of global climate change, including participation in the U.S. Conference of Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement. The Winston-Salem City Council in May endorsed (on my motion) the Climate Protection Agreement, becoming the largest city in North Carolina thus far to join.

I had the opportunity at the news event on Thursday to explain the efforts already underway in our city to contribute to cutting carbon emissions: buying more efficient vehicles, conserving energy, increasing opportunities for biking, walking, and other alternate transit, and improving land use planning to reduce urban sprawl. The mayor and council members of Winston-Salem thanked the Sierra Club for its recognition of our efforts, and for its own nationwide leadership on this critical concern. As North Carolina's Lieutenant Governor, I will work to see that our entire state plays its part in this critical mission.
